Kamloops, BC
Canada's Tournament CapitalWelcome to Kamloops, known as Canada's Tournament Capital. The City of Kamloops is situated in the Thomoson Valley where the north and south Thompson Rivers join: in fact, the name Kamloops translates to "meeting of the waters". Divided at its centre by water, it is accessible by air, bus and rail. Kamloops boasts a population of over 90,000 people and continues to grow, with a real estate market of 39,000 homes. The year 2012 marked 200 years since the Kamloops community was formed. Home owners are happy and pleasant, giving the city a reputation of being one of BC's friendliest cities.
Despite our cold winters, residents living in Kamloops see 2,000 hours of sunshine per year. Over 100 lakes are located in the surrounding area, creating the perfect getaway for nature lovers. The city landscape features an array of mountains, grasslands, river valleys and even deserts, and outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy activities year-round. This leads to popular leisures such as: ATV riding, skateboarding, fishing, cross-country skiing, hiking, and mountain biking. Avid golfers can play at any of the 12 distinguished courses in Kamloops.
The city earned the title of "Tournament Capital" after hosting numerous first class sporting events. From the West Canada Summer Games to the Canadian Masters Indoor Track and Field Championships, Kamloops has become a household name among Canadian athletes. Over 90 different sporting events are held in Kamloops per year.
A handful of communities make up the downtown core, located in the heart of the city. Lined with mature trees and heritage buildings, Victoria Street in downtown Kamloops tempts people to wander between buskers, unique venders and coffee shops. Thompson Rivers University is located right in Kamloops, and the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology is only a one hour drive away. There are also 34 elementary schools and 13 secondary schools that provide education to Kamloops families.
The City of Kamloops provides excellent support services to its residents. The government of British Colombia has established a Home Owner Grant Program to decrease property taxes for eligible residents. Social development programs such as affordable recreation and seniors services are also available here.
